4 Tips for Social Media Marketing

Social media is important. You have heard this for years now, from tried and true marketers, from that snotty intern and even from your wife’s brother’s kid. It has become a necessary part of doing business in the modern digital age, and yet it is still a vast unknown for many business owners.

If you are new to social media marketing, here are 4 tips to get you started!

1. Make it fun – This is probably the most important part that a lot of businesses drop the ball on. People want to interact with brands that are witty and entertaining, not boring blocks of wood. Having fun gives your brand and business a personality and makes your base more likely to come back to interact with you. An added bonus is that if you are having a good time, you are more likely to continue to put in the work to maintain and grow your social following.

2. Have a schedule – Consistency is very important in the realm of social media. With so much content constantly being updated, it is very easy to get lost in the crowd. Also having a schedule will help to keep you involved and active. It is a very grueling task to create micro and macro content and knowing that you have deadlines to get content out will serve to help you when you become weary.

3. Be social – The social aspect of social media is often overlook by many businesses. Simply shouting your content to the ether will get you no return on your time and effort and will lend itself to burnout. By interacting not only with other people but other brands, you demonstrate a human behind your brand. This personal touch encourages further interaction and in the long run will gain you actual followers on social media. As your social proof increases, so will your business and your marketing reach.

4. Know your medium – Each social media platform has a specific culture, tone and rules. There is nothing worse than seeing a brand or marketer attempt to utilize social media and appear as an outsider. Particular examples are using more than 2 hashtags on Twitter or using non ironic hashtags on Facebook. When you position yourself as an outsider, it makes it difficult for followers and consumers to embrace you. There is a learning curve with any platform that should be embraced and studied. If you do not grow to know the medium, the medium will never know you.

Social media is vast and ever growing. Make sure that yours is being handled by an expert or it will eventually cause more harm than good!
